the journey of yogaround
YogaRound has been an idea for years, but not in the form it is today. Often, hula hooping is referred to as a form of meditative movement and yoga is referred as another form. Jenny, the founder, has been hula hooping for over ten years and practicing yoga for a few years longer - the connection was clear as soon as soon as she felt more comfortable with the hoop in her hands.
The circle became an extension of the body, and she wanted to teach others how to grasp this extension. She decided to further her education in hula hoops first and became Hoop Love Coach certified in 2017, joining a global group of certified hula hoop instructors. From then on she began spreading hoop love in her local community, exploring the world of teaching others how to hula hoop as well as share the art through performance and spinning fire.
Before YogaRound was even a name, she taught hoop yoga at Michigan Hoop Dance Retreat in 2018 and 2019 and strongly felt a calling to continue diving into this practice.
She started her 200HR yoga teacher training in 2019 at Peoples Yoga in Lansing, Michigan and the practice significantly transformed to using the hula hoop as not solely an extension of the body, but a genuine yoga prop; one that assists with planes of movement and helping find your center. The hoop serves as an instrument to deepen a stretch or provide balance.
YogaRound is yoga with a hula hoop, not hula hooping while doing yoga.
It's focus is to help deepen ones' yoga practice (or begin one!).

About Jenny, YogaRound Creator & instructor

I started practicing yoga in 2005, as a way to help me lose weight, but then started coming to my mat to love myself rather than try to change myself. Sean Corne became my first teacher with a DVD set I purchased (and still have!). One video was an instructional Vinyasa flow and the next was solely breath, no instructions. Moving on to the second DVD is when I truly began to witness the spiritual and mental benefits of connecting the breath with movement.
I was introduced to hula hooping in 2009 at Rothbury Music Festival (before it was called Electric Forest) and my two roomies and me got hoops immediately. My roommate Kim would learn tricks from YouTube and then teach me! Our living room ceiling had so many scuffs from playing with hoops, we made hoops out of our basement and it was through this circle that more harmony with body, mind and spirit was made. It's exciting to see this magical circle positively impact the lives of those who touch it, just as it has affected mine.
Taking my 200 and 300HR yoga teacher training at Peoples Yoga Studio, is when yoga and hula hoops really connected. Learning about the planes of movement and proprioceptive movements, I recognized how much "FEELback" the hula hoop gives the yoga practitioner. My friend Kim that taught me hoop tricks is now one of my students and says YogaRound has taught her how to do the poses more honestly.
